In many towns, up and down the country, the start of the festive season is heralded by the switching on of the Christmas lights. As the nights draw in, these illuminations really bring much needed winter joy.
Supporting many of these community events are students who attend one of the almost 50 Razzamataz schools across the UK. Bringing extra Christmas cheer, the children and teens perform songs and dances to entertain the crowds who are looking to get in to the yuletide spirit.
“A big part of the Razzamataz ethos is to give back to the community and support local charity,” explains Denise Hutton-Gosney, MD and Founder of Razzamataz. “Not only does this benefit the friends, family and community who like to come and watch the children in action, it is also improving the performance skills of our students.”
Over the years, the Razzamataz schools have established strong links with their communities and raised thousands of pounds for charity. Either through carol singing, collecting money while bag packing or taking part in sponsored events.
“We already know that participation in the performing arts is good to encourage team work and empathy,” adds Denise. “By performing in local events such as a Christmas Light Switch On or carol singing, the children can actively do something to raise money and benefit those in their area who need it. In today’s fast paced society, it is sometimes good to stop and look around and ask yourself what you can do for someone else.”
At many of the Christmas Light Switch On events, the students have performed specially prepared festive pieces and have entertained the crowds with a mixture of their singing, dancing and acting skills.
During the classes at Razzamataz, the students will be trained in all three disciplines and will experience a wide range of performing arts genres from classic West End musical theatre through to street dance and pop singing.
Razzamataz Principals come from a wide range of backgrounds. Many are former professional performers, lots are teachers and the flexibility of the role attracts many parents who want to be able to spend school holidays with their children.
